What is DHA and how do sunless tanning products work?

Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a colourless chemical that interacts with the dead cells located in the stratum corneum of the of the epidermis.  The DHA causes a chemical reaction with the amino acids on the outermost layer of the skin.  This chemical reaction takes 4 to 8 hours to become noticeable and lasts 5 to 8 days from time of application.

Every day, millions of dead skin cells are sloughed off or worn away on the surface of the skin.  In fact every 35 to 45 days , you have an entirely new epidermis.  This is why tans from sunless – or self-tanning lotions will gradually fade – as the dead cells are worn away, so is your tan. For this reason, most of these products suggest that you reapply the sunless or self-tanner about every three days to maintain your tan. 

United States health authorises declared in 1973 already that DHA is safe and suitable for use in cosmetics that are applied to colour the skin.  There are no known harmful side effects reported from the use of sunless tanning products containing DHA.  We normally do not  spray tan pregnant woman without the consent of her doctor.

There are many different kinds of sunless tanning products available today.  People have been able

to rub on a tan since 1960 when Coppertone® came out with the first sunless tanning product.  Since then, there have been several advancements made on the sunless tanning scene.  Today one can smooth, swipe or spray on a light bronze or a deep dark tan.  Many of these products take up to 60 minutes to start taking effect.  Once one adds in the drying time, it could take up to three hours to achieve that sunless tan.
